Stop the Madness

In the blog world, there is a phenomenon known as frackin' Friday.  We bloggers are able to rant about what we wish.  So here's mine.

The phrase when and if is used quite frequently in our everyday world.  Yet it is incorrect to put them together with 'and.'  Why, you ask?  When can be various parts of speech, but either way the word denotes a time frame.  Something will happen eventually.   If can be a conjunction or a noun, but the word requires a condition for something to happen, and that something may never happen.

So one can see that created as a compound phrase, these words cannot co-exist.  That is not to say that it cannot be written in some fashion, but better sentence construction is in order.

  7. Hmmm...I've never heard of this 'frakin' Friday' thing...and whenever I hear the word 'frak' in any context I automatically think of "Battlestar Galactica".

  8. Is it bad that it took me three reads to understand what you were saying? I'm going to blame it on it being Friday night and I have nothing better to do then to read blogs ;o)

  12. I don't think I've heard that or used it. Or perhaps I've overlooked because I have so many grammatical concerns.

  15. Profound and very correct. Though I had not given it much thought before, I am sure that henceforth it will jump out at me like a beacon in the night when I hear it in the future. Hopefully, I will not catch myself saying it. ;-) Btw, thank you for stopping by my blog. As a new blogger, I was beginning to question my purpose. Seeing you there not only made my day, it inspired me to write even more.
