A local elementary school here in Baltimore held a pep rally yesterday. This was, of course, in support of our hometown Ravens traveling to New England for the upcoming championship game on Sunday.
An email was sent to parents stating that if children did not wear either purple clothing or Ravens 'gear,' they could not participate in the rally and would be shuttled to the library.
I found this interesting since the library certainly should never be considered a form of punishment. Not only that, Baltimore's slogan years ago was "The City That Reads."
Hahaha, wow. They're legit ravens fans...

So all the kids who would rather sit around a library reading knew just how to get to get out of going to a rally they didn't want to go to........lol
ReplyDeleteIt is what I would have done, as I always prefered to spend my time in the library when I was at school...........
I would think some lawyers would be happy to be all over that. First, you can't punish children for not wearing clothes in support of a sports team. What about the people who don't have the so-called appropriate clothing and can't afford something new? Second, going to the library should never be a punishment. It's a reward. It's even more of a privilege now to go to the library with so many cities closing some libraries and cutting hours at others.

We got a kick out of all the purple and black flamingos the first time we saw them around B'more when we visited. Talk about Ravens mania! Kinda hard to believe how much everyone has gotten behind them after the heartbreak of the Colts. We watched the game today. A killer. Sooooo close. Bummer.

I think there are many reasons they hate to read. They seldom have time to really get into a book. The elementary school day is filled with rushing from one activity to the next. Every school should have one day each week when long periods of time are allotted to getting comfortable and reading. The children are also given such boring books or are only allowed to read excerpts from books because so many people argue about which books are appropriate for kids. And then there are the parents who discourage reading. They discourage me. I'm grateful my children grew up loving to read, but it was a habit they picked up at home, not in school.

ReplyDeleteI have to agree with Janie on this one! My kids went to a school that had spirit day dress down day. This was a uniform wearing school...so it was a big deal not to have to wear the uniform. But you HAD to wear the spirit wear... which I didn't buy. I had better things to spend my money on, like food or shoes. Not some crazy sweatshirt for 25 bucks with a name written across the front. :(
